Prepping for storm season? Get an easy eavestrough installation checklist and know when to call eavestrough installers in Peterborough to protect your home

When a heavy storm rolls through Peterborough, you usually notice the roof, the trees, and the backyard first. The eavestroughs are easy to ignore until water starts spilling over the sides or pooling around your foundation. That is often the moment homeowners say they wish they had called credible eavestrough installers a bit earlier. A simple checklist before and after storm season can protect your home and help you spot early warning signs before they turn into repairs.

We have walked more than a few properties after a big rain where a small clog or loose bracket turned into siding damage, basement leaks, or washed-out gardens. The good news is that most of these issues can be avoided with regular checks and professional eavestrough installation when your system reaches the end of its life.

Why eavestrough installers in Peterborough focus on storm seasons

Storm season in Peterborough brings heavy rain, strong winds, and fast temperature swings. Your eavestroughs handle all of that in real time. Local eavestrough installers in Peterborough pay special attention to the weeks leading into spring storms and fall rain because that is when weak spots show up fastest.

A well designed system does more than just catch water. It moves it away from your roof, siding, and foundation in a controlled way. When eavestroughs clog, sag, or separate at the seams, water finds its own path. That is usually not good news for fascia boards, walkways, or basements. Thoughtful eavestrough installation is your first line of defense against that kind of storm damage.

Pre-storm checklist from experienced eavestrough installers in Peterborough

Before storm season really ramps up, it pays to walk around your home with a quick list in hand. Many eavestrough installers in Peterborough start with simple visual checks like these.

            Pre-storm checklist.

            ● Look for sagging sections. Stand back from the house and check if any runs bow or slope the wrong way.

            ● Check for visible gaps. Inspect joints, corners, and downspout connections for separations or cracks.

            ● Clear debris by hand. Remove leaves, twigs, and roofing granules from open eavestroughs.

            ● Test downspouts. Run a garden hose and see if water flows freely out the bottom.

            ● Inspect fasteners. Spot any missing screws or brackets pulling away from the fascia.

If you notice recurring issues in the same area each year, that is usually a sign that you are approaching the point where fresh eavestrough installation will do more good than another patch.

During storm season. What to watch from the ground

You do not need to climb a ladder in the middle of a storm. In fact, you should not. But you can learn a lot just by watching how water behaves while it is raining. This is something many eavestrough installers in Peterborough quietly do when they are called out for quotes.

During a storm, take a quick look at.

            ● Overflow points where water spills over rather than into the trough.

            ● Water sheeting down walls or pooling below corners.

            ● Downspouts that barely trickle while others gush.

            ● Areas where water hits flowerbeds or walkways hard enough to move soil or gravel.

Patterns like these point to undersized eavestroughs, poor pitch, or sections that are simply worn out. That is where professional eavestrough installers can correct sizing and slope to match how your roof actually sheds water.

            After-storm checklist most homeowners skip

Once the skies clear, lots of people just move on with their day. Experienced eavestrough installers in Peterborough know this is when hidden damage reveals itself.

After a major storm, walk your property and check.

            ● Ground erosion near downspouts. Look for washed-out soil or exposed roots.

            ● Water stains on siding or brick below the eavestrough line.

            ● New cracks in walkways or steps close to drainage points.

            ● Pieces of shingle, metal, or sealant in your eavestroughs or on the ground.

If you spot these issues again and again, your system might not just need cleaning. Upgrading to properly sized and well sloped eavestrough installation will usually stop the ongoing damage and give water a clear, safe route away from the house.

When DIY maintenance is enough and when to call eavestrough installers

There is nothing wrong with light DIY work. Many homeowners handle basic cleaning a few times a year. A sturdy ladder, good gloves, and careful footing go a long way. But there is a point where it makes more sense to bring in eavestrough installers who work at height every day.

You should think about calling a professional when.

            ● Your home is two or more storeys and access feels risky.

            ● Sections of eavestrough have pulled away from the fascia.

            ● You see regular leaks at corners or over doorways.

            ● Your current system is old, mismatched, or patched in several places.

Experienced installers can tell you quickly whether a repair makes sense or if a full eavestrough installation will actually save you money and trouble over the next decade.

How professional eavestrough installation prevents future storm issues

Modern systems are far better than the pieced together eavestroughs many older Peterborough homes still carry. When you invest in a new eavestrough installation,, you are not just swapping like for like. You gain.

            ● Correctly sized troughs to handle today’s heavier storms.

            ● Proper slope along each run so water never sits and freezes.

            ● Fewer seams which means fewer leak points over time.

            ● Secure fastening systems that hold up to wind and ice.

Local Peterborough eavestrough installers also understand how snow load, ice dams, and freeze thaw cycles affect homes in this area. They design with that in mind instead of using generic layouts.

Putting it all together into a simple yearly routine

If you like practical steps, you can think of your eavestrough care in three stages each year.

            1. Pre-storm season. Clean, inspect for sagging and gaps, and fix small issues.

            2. During storm season. Watch how water behaves from the ground and take notes.

            3. After big storms. Look for stains, erosion, and physical damage around the house.

If the same problems keep recurring, that is your cue to talk with trusted eavestrough installers in Peterborough about a more permanent fix. A well-planned eavestrough installation paired with simple seasonal checks will keep water moving where it should go and help protect your siding, foundation, and walkways for years.

Roof damage often shows up as small clues before it becomes a big headache. Missing these signs can lead to leaks, mold, and structural issues that not only impact your home’s comfort but also your long-term budget. The sooner you start looking for signs of roof damage, the more you can protect your home and your wallet.

Common Signs of Roof Damage You Shouldn’t Ignore

You don’t need specialized training to spot roof damage. Most issues start small and can be seen from the ground or inside your home.

            Here’s what to watch for:

           ● Missing or damaged shingles

Loose, broken, or missing shingles tend to signal storm-related roof damage. After a big wind or heavy rain, it’s worth walking around your house to look for spots where shingles are gone or have curled edges.

           ● Water stains on ceilings or walls

If you see brown or yellow spots inside your home, that often means water has gotten past your roof’s outer layer. These stains are some of the clearest signs of roof damage, especially after recent storms.

           ● Sagging spots on the roof

Take a look at your roofline. Any dips or sagging can suggest there’s a problem with the structure underneath. Sagging is a definite warning that your roof needs attention soon.

           ● Granules in gutters

Asphalt shingles lose granules over time, but noticeable piles in your gutters point to roof damage that’s removing your roof’s protective layer. Fewer granules means a higher risk for leaks and wear.

           ● Moss or algae growth

Too much green on your roof? Moss and algae can trap moisture, weakening your shingles. This is one of the more subtle signs of roof damage, but shouldn’t be ignored.

           ● Visible flashing issues

Flashing around chimneys, skylights, and vents helps keep water out. If you notice cracked or loose flashing, water may seep inside, causing minor roof damage that can quickly worsen.

Signs of Roof Damage That Show Up Inside Your Home

Sometimes, roof damage hides until water works its way into the attic or interior. Watch for:

            ● Damp insulation or rafters in attic spaces

            ● Mold or mildew smells near ceilings

            ● Paint peeling or bubbling on walls

            ● Drips after a rainstorm

            ● If you notice these, your roof may leak. Catching these signs of roof damage early keeps repairs quick and costs low.

How Weather in Peterborough Can Cause Roof Damage

Peterborough experiences heavy snow, freezing rain, summer hail, and strong winds. These weather events can loosen shingles, damage gutters, and freeze moisture under roofing materials. If you’re not checking for signs of roof damage after storms, minor problems can grow fast.

Regular inspections especially after a big storm help homeowners find roof damage and arrange simple fixes before the next round of bad weather arrives.

What Should You Do If You Spot Signs of Roof Damage?

If you see signs of roof damage on your home, you don’t need to panic. But you should act quickly and get expert advice. Here are some easy next steps:

            1. Take photos of the affected areas for your records.

            2. Contact an experienced local roofer for a proper assessment.

            3. Schedule a roof inspection to check for hidden problems.

            4. Ask about repair options, warranties, and ongoing maintenance.

            5. Keep an eye out for new signs of roof damage as seasons change.

It’s usually better to get professional help. A roofer can point out the most minor issues and suggest fixes that keep your roof solid for years to come. Simple Ways to Prevent Roof Damage

Prevention goes a long way. Try these tips to reduce the risk of roof damage:

            ● Clean gutters at least twice a year

            ● Trim back tree branches close to your roof

            ● Inspect shingles after storms

            ● Schedule yearly inspections each spring or fall

Strong, well-maintained roofs rarely experience major problems out of the blue. Regular attention makes it much easier to spot signs of roof damage early.

Asphalt shingles are the most commonly used roofing material in North America, and they are a top choice for homes in Peterborough due to their affordability, reliability, and wide range of options. Asphalt shingles are designed to withstand the harsh weather conditions that Peterborough experiences, making them a durable choice for homeowners looking for both cost savings and long-term performance.

Asphalt shingles are among the most affordable roofing materials available, making them a popular choice for homeowners on a budget.

           Durability:

High-quality asphalt shingles are designed to withstand wind, rain, snow, and UV exposure. They are resistant to cracking, warping, and curling, which helps them maintain their integrity even during extreme weather.

           Variety of Styles and Colors:

Asphalt shingles come in a wide range of colors and textures, so homeowners can choose a style that complements their home’s architecture and enhances curb appeal.

           Drawbacks of Asphalt Shingle Roofing:

           Shorter Lifespan:

Compared to materials like slate or metal, asphalt shingles have a shorter lifespan, typically lasting 15–30 years. This is much shorter than the durability of alternatives, which may require more frequent replacements.

           Prone to Weather Damage:

Asphalt shingles are vulnerable to extreme weather conditions, such as high winds, heavy rain, and hail. In regions with frequent storms, shingles can curl, crack, or even blow off, reducing their effectiveness.

           Heat Sensitivity:

Asphalt shingles can absorb a significant amount of heat from the sun, leading to higher energy bills in hot climates. This can also cause them to degrade faster over time, as the heat can make them brittle or cause them to lose their protective granules.

Architectural Shingles: Enhanced Durability and Aesthetic Appeal

Architectural shingles, also known as dimensional shingles, are a premium option that offers a step up from standard asphalt shingles. These shingles are designed with multiple layers of material to provide a richer, more textured appearance that mimics the look of more expensive roofing materials, such as wood or slate. Architectural shingles are a fantastic choice for homeowners in Peterborough who want to enhance the visual appeal of their home while benefiting from added durability.

           Benefits of Architectural Shingle Roofing:

           Aesthetic Appeal:

Architectural shingles are thicker and more textured than traditional asphalt shingles, giving your home a more upscale and elegant appearance. They can mimic the look of high-end roofing materials, providing the aesthetics of wood or slate without the hefty price tag.

           Superior Durability:

With multiple layers of material, architectural shingles are more durable than standard asphalt shingles. They are designed to withstand high winds and are resistant to cracking, curling, and fading, making them ideal for the variable weather conditions in Peterborough.

           Longer Lifespan:

Architectural shingles have a longer lifespan than traditional asphalt shingles, often lasting 30 years or more with proper maintenance.

           Drawbacks of Architectural Shingle Roofing:

           Higher Initial Cost:

Architectural shingles are generally more expensive than basic asphalt shingles due to their enhanced durability, thicker layers, and aesthetic appeal. The upfront cost can be a significant factor when compared to standard shingles.

           Weight:

While architectural shingles are heavier than traditional asphalt shingles, this added weight may require additional structural support, especially for older homes. The need for reinforcing the roof could add extra costs.

           Vulnerability to Extreme Weather:

Although architectural shingles are more durable than standard asphalt shingles, they are still vulnerable to extreme weather like high winds, heavy rain, and hail. In areas with frequent severe weather, architectural shingles can still be damaged or blown off.

For homeowners in Peterborough who are looking for a natural, rustic look, wood shingles are a fantastic option. Made from high-quality cedar, redwood, or pine, wood shingles offer a timeless, classic aesthetic that can add character and charm to any home. While wood shingles require more maintenance than asphalt or architectural shingles, they offer unmatched natural beauty that appeals to those seeking a unique, organic look for their home’s exterior.

           Benefits of Wood Shingle Roofing:

           Timeless Aesthetic:

Wood shingles provide a natural, warm appearance that cannot be replicated by synthetic materials. They are perfect for homeowners who appreciate the beauty of wood and want their home to reflect that.

           Energy Efficiency:

Wood is a natural insulator, which means that wood shingles can help keep your home cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter, reducing the need for excessive heating and cooling.

           Environmental Benefits:

Wood shingles are a renewable resource, especially when sourced sustainably. For environmentally conscious homeowners, wood shingles can be an eco-friendly roofing option.

           Drawbacks of Wood Shingle Roofing:

           Cost:

Wood shingles are generally more expensive than asphalt shingles, both in terms of material and installation. In addition, the cost of maintenance over time can add up.

           Environmental Impact:

Although wood is a natural material, the sourcing of wood for shingles can contribute to deforestation if not done sustainably. Additionally, the frequent need for treatments and chemicals (e.g., preservatives, fire retardants) can diminish their environmental benefits.

           Sensitivity to Weather Conditions:

Wood shingles are more susceptible to warping, splitting, or curling in extreme weather conditions, such as high heat or cold. In areas with frequent temperature fluctuations, this can cause the shingles to wear out more quickly.

           Slate Shingles:

            Elegant, Durable, and Long-Lasting

For homeowners who are looking for the ultimate in luxury and durability, slate shingles are a top-tier option. High Initial Cost:

Slate roofing is more expensive than other materials like asphalt or wood. The cost of the material itself, along with labor for installation, makes it a large upfront investment.

           Heavy Weight:

Slate is a dense material, and the weight of a slate roof can be a concern. Some homes may require structural reinforcement to support the added weight, which can increase installation costs.

           Labor-Intensive Installation:

Installing slate shingles requires specialized knowledge and skill, which can lead to higher labor costs.

           The Importance of Roof Ventilation

Roof ventilation plays a vital role in controlling the temperature and moisture levels in your attic. Without proper ventilation, warm, moist air can become trapped in your attic, leading to condensation. This moisture can seep into the wood, insulation, and other materials in your attic, causing them to deteriorate over time.

If your roof is properly ventilated, you won’t have to worry about moisture buildups. Proper ventilation protects the integrity of your roof and extends its lifespan. Proper ventilation helps to keep your home energy-efficient, reducing the strain on your heating and cooling systems by maintaining a more consistent temperature throughout the year.

           How Does Roof Ventilation Work?

Roof ventilation works by allowing air to flow through your attic space, which helps to regulate temperature and moisture. There are two main types of roof ventilation:

           intake vents

            and

           exhaust vents

           .

Intake Vents:

These are typically located along the eaves or soffits of your roof. They allow cool, fresh air to enter the attic.

Exhaust Vents:

Located near the roof’s ridge, these vents allow hot, moist air to escape from the attic.

The combination of intake and exhaust vents creates a continuous airflow, drawing in cool air and expelling warm, moist air. This process helps to keep your attic dry and cool, reducing the risk of moisture damage and helping to maintain a stable indoor temperature.

The Consequences of Poor Roof Ventilation

Improper roof ventilation can lead to significant issues for your home. Some of the most common problems include:

• Mold and Mildew Growth:

Excess moisture in your attic provides the perfect environment for mold and mildew to thrive. These fungi can spread throughout your home, causing health problems and damaging the structure.

• Wood Rot:

Moisture can cause the wooden components of your roof, such as rafters and beams, to rot. Over time, this can compromise the structural integrity of your home, leading to costly repairs.

• Increased Energy Costs:

Without proper ventilation, your attic can become excessively hot in the summer and cold in the winter. This forces your HVAC system to work harder to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature, leading to higher energy bills.

• Ice Dams:

In colder climates, inadequate ventilation can contribute to the formation of ice dams on your roof. Ice dams occur when warm air in the attic melts snow on the roof, which then refreezes at the eaves, causing water to back up under the shingles and into your home.

Signs That Your Roof Ventilation Needs Attention

It’s essential to recognize the signs of poor roof ventilation so you can address them before they lead to serious damage. Some common indicators include:

• Peeling Paint:

Excess moisture can cause paint to peel from walls and ceilings, particularly in upper floors and attic spaces.

• Musty Odors:

A damp, musty smell in your attic or other parts of your home is a clear sign of moisture problems.

• Sagging Roof:

If your roof appears to be sagging or drooping, it could be a sign of wood rot caused by moisture damage.

• Rust on Metal Components:

Moisture in your attic can cause metal components, such as nails or roof fasteners, to rust, leading to weakened structural integrity.

If you notice any of these signs, it’s crucial to have your roof ventilation system inspected by professionals. Companies like Feeney Roofing in Peterborough specialize in roof repairs and maintenance, including assessing and improving roof ventilation systems to protect your home from moisture damage.

Choosing the right underlayment for your home depends on your local climate, roof type, and budget. Learn more.

Roofing underlayment is a crucial component in the construction and longevity of your roof. It’s a secondary barrier against the elements, providing added protection under your shingles or tiles. Choosing the right underlayment for your home depends on your local climate, roof type, and budget. Here, Feeney Roofing will explore the different types of roofing underlayment and help you determine which one is best suited for your needs.

           Why is Roofing Underlayment Important?

Roofing underlayment is a water-resistant or waterproof barrier material installed directly onto your roof deck. It serves as a protective layer to prevent moisture, wind, and other elements from penetrating your home. There are three primary types of roofing underlayment: asphalt-saturated felt, synthetic underlayment, and rubberized asphalt underlayment.

           Asphalt-Saturated Felt

Asphalt-saturated felt, commonly known as tar paper, has been a staple in roofing for decades. It’s made by saturating a base material (typically organic or fiberglass) with asphalt to create a water-resistant layer.

           Why Choose Asphalt-Saturated Felt

Asphalt-saturated felt is an affordable option and provides adequate protection for most roofing systems. It is relatively easy to install and has a proven track record in various climates. The material offers a breathable barrier, which can help prevent moisture buildup under your roof covering.

Why Asphalt-Saturated Felt isn’t Right for You

However, asphalt-saturated felt is not without its drawbacks. It can tear easily during installation, especially in windy conditions, and it may degrade faster than other types of underlayment when exposed to the elements. Additionally, it’s heavier than synthetic options, which can add to the overall weight of your roofing system.

           Ideal Use

Asphalt-saturated felt is suitable for homeowners looking for a cost-effective solution and those with traditional roofing materials like asphalt shingles. It performs well in moderate climates but may not be the best choice for areas with extreme weather conditions.

           Synthetic Underlayment

Synthetic underlayment is made from woven or spun polypropylene or polyethene fibers, creating a lightweight, durable, and water-resistant barrier. It’s designed to offer superior performance compared to traditional felt underlayment.

           Why Choose Synthetic Underlayment

One of the main benefits of synthetic underlayment is its durability. It’s resistant to tearing, even in harsh weather conditions, and can withstand prolonged exposure to UV rays. Synthetic underlayment is also lightweight, making it easier to handle and install. It provides excellent water resistance and often features non-slip surfaces to improve safety during installation.

Why Synthetic Underlayment isn’t Right For You

The primary downside of synthetic underlayment is the cost. It tends to be more expensive than asphalt-saturated felt. However, the higher initial investment can be justified by its longer lifespan and enhanced performance.

           Ideal Use

Synthetic underlayment is ideal for homeowners who prioritize durability and performance, especially in areas prone to severe weather. It’s suitable for all types of roofing materials, including asphalt shingles, metal roofing, and tiles.

           Rubberized Asphalt Underlayment

Rubberized asphalt underlayment is a high-performance material that combines asphalt with rubber polymers to create a fully waterproof barrier. It typically features a peel-and-stick application, allowing it to adhere directly to the roof deck.

           Why Choose Rubberized Asphalt Underlayment

Rubberized asphalt underlayment provides the highest level of protection among the three types. It is completely waterproof and offers superior resistance to extreme temperatures, making it ideal for both hot and cold climates. The self-adhering nature of this underlayment creates a tight seal around fasteners and roof penetrations, further enhancing its water-resistant properties.

Why Rubberized Asphalt Underlayment isn’t Right For You

The main disadvantage of rubberized asphalt underlayment is its cost, which is higher than both asphalt-saturated felt and synthetic underlayment. Additionally, installation can be more complex, often requiring professional expertise to ensure proper adhesion and coverage.

           Ideal Use

Rubberized asphalt underlayment is best suited for high-risk areas where water intrusion is a significant concern, such as valleys, eaves, and low-slope roofs. It’s an excellent choice for homeowners willing to invest in top-tier protection for their roofing system.

Choosing the Right Underlayment for Your Home

When deciding on the best underlayment for your home, consider the following factors:

           Climate

Your local climate plays a significant role in determining the right underlayment. If you live in an area with frequent heavy rain, snow, or extreme temperatures, investing in synthetic or rubberized asphalt underlayment may provide the best protection. For milder climates, asphalt-saturated felt can be a cost-effective choice.

           Roof Type and Slope

The type and slope of your roof can also influence your underlayment choice. Steep-slope roofs benefit from the enhanced grip and durability of synthetic underlayment, while low-slope roofs may require the superior waterproofing of rubberized asphalt underlayment. Consider the compatibility of the underlayment with your roofing material as well.

           Budget

Budget is always a consideration when undertaking home improvement projects. While synthetic and rubberized asphalt underlayments are more expensive upfront, their longevity and performance can result in cost savings over time by reducing the need for repairs and replacements.

           Professional Installation

Regardless of the type of underlayment you choose, proper installation is critical to its effectiveness. Hiring a professional roofing contractor ensures that the underlayment is installed correctly, providing the best possible protection for your home.

5 Things You Need to Know About Installing Skylights and Sun Tunnels

Installing skylight involves more than just cutting a hole in the roof and popping in a window. Here are must knows before you install skylights or sun tunnels.

Installing Skylights and sun tunnels are fantastic additions to any home, bringing natural light into spaces that otherwise might remain dim. They can transform the atmosphere, making rooms feel more open and inviting. However, installing these features involves more than just cutting a hole in the roof and popping in a window. Feeney Roofing brings you a list of five things you must know before you install skylights or sun tunnels.

           1. Curb-mounted Skylights vs Deck-mounted Skylights

There are two primary types of skylights: curb-mounted and deck-mounted. While they both light up your interior, they have their differences.

           Curb-Mounted Skylights

Curb-mounted skylights sit on a raised frame, or “curb,” that is built onto your roof. This frame provides extra height, which can be beneficial for roofs with low slopes. One significant advantage of curb-mounted skylights is that they are less prone to leaking because the raised curb helps to direct water away from the window.

           Deck-Mounted Skylights

Deck-mounted skylights, on the other hand, are installed flush with the roof, providing a sleek, integrated look. They are typically easier to install since they don’t require the additional step of building a curb. However, they need precise installation and proper sealing to prevent leaks.

           2. Location, Location, Location

Where you install your skylight or sun tunnel is just as important as the type you choose. Here’s what to consider:

           Roof Slope and Orientation

The slope and orientation of your roof affect the amount of light that will enter your home. Skylights on south-facing roofs capture more sunlight, which is great for bringing in lots of natural light but can also lead to overheating. North-facing skylights provide softer, more diffused light, which is ideal for spaces where you want consistent, moderate lighting.

           Room Use

Consider how the room is used. For example, a kitchen can benefit from bright, direct light, whereas a bedroom might need a softer, more ambient light to create a restful environment. Sun tunnels are perfect for small, enclosed spaces like hallways or closets, where traditional skylights might not be practical.

           3. Call Professionals to Handle Installing Skylights

Installing skylights and sun tunnels properly is important to avoid common issues like leaks and drafts (and leaks can become a real pain). Call Feeney Roofing to install your skylights/sun tunnels. Our installation teams guarantee trouble-free skylights and sun tunnels. Feeney Roofing’s installation process involves:

           Waterproofing

Waterproofing is one of the most important aspects of skylight installation. We ensure that flashing and sealing materials are used correctly to prevent water from seeping in around the edges. Using high-quality flashing kits designed for your specific skylight model can make a big difference.

           Insulation

We insulate around your skylight or sun tunnel to help prevent heat loss in the winter and heat gain in the summer. Proper insulation also prevents condensation from forming, which can lead to mold and mildew problems.

           4. Consider Energy Efficiency

Skylights and sun tunnels can have a significant impact on your home’s energy efficiency. Here’s what to keep in mind:

           Glazing Options

Skylights come with various glazing options, such as double or triple glazing, which can improve insulation and energy efficiency. Low-E (low emissivity) coatings help reduce heat transfer, keeping your home cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter.

           Ventilation

Some skylights offer ventilation options, which can help keep your home cool. Ventilated skylights can be opened to allow hot air to escape, reducing the need for air conditioning. This feature is particularly useful in kitchens and bathrooms, where heat and humidity levels can rise quickly.

           Sun Tunnels

Sun tunnels are incredibly efficient at bringing light into your home with minimal heat transfer. They use reflective tubing to channel sunlight from the roof into your living space, making them a great choice for small or windowless areas where a traditional skylight isn’t feasible.

           5. Maintenance and Durability

Once installed, skylights and sun tunnels require regular maintenance to ensure they continue to perform well. Here’s what you need to know:

           Cleaning

Skylights can accumulate dirt, leaves, and other debris, which can block sunlight and reduce efficiency. Regular cleaning, both inside and out, will keep them clear and functional. Some modern skylights have self-cleaning glass, which can minimize maintenance needs.

           Inspecting Seals and Flashing

Periodically inspect the seals and flashing around your skylights and sun tunnels to ensure they remain intact. Weather changes and temperature fluctuations can cause materials to expand and contract, potentially leading to leaks if not maintained properly.

           Replacing Components

Over time, components like seals, gaskets, and even the glass itself may need replacing. Stay on top of these maintenance tasks to avoid larger issues and ensure the longevity of your installation.

What are Fascias?

Here’s a brief introduction to fascias:

           Function:

Fascias are the long, straight boards that run along the lower edge of the roof, connecting the trusses and supporting the bottom row of roof tiles or shingles. They serve both functional and aesthetic purposes, providing a smooth, even appearance while protecting the roof and interior from the elements.

           Materials:

Fascias are commonly crafted from wood, uPVC (unplasticized polyvinyl chloride), or metal. Each material has its own set of advantages and considerations. For example, wood offers a traditional aesthetic but may require more maintenance, while uPVC is durable and low-maintenance.

Consider opting for uPVC fascias for a balance of durability and minimal maintenance. Feeney Roofing specializes in installing uPVC fascias that not only enhance your roof’s aesthetics but also provide long-lasting protection.

Here’s a brief introduction to soffits:

           Function

Soffits are the boards tucked beneath the fascias, bridging the gap between the exterior wall of the house and the outer edge of the roof. They play a crucial role in providing ventilation to the roof space, preventing condensation and maintaining a balanced temperature.

           Materials:

Similar to fascias, soffits can be made from wood, uPVC, or metal. The choice of material depends on factors such as climate, maintenance preferences, and overall design aesthetics.

Feeney Roofing Tip:

Proper soffit ventilation is key to a healthy roofing system. Feeney Roofing recommends uPVC soffits for their durability and resistance to weather-related wear, ensuring optimal ventilation and protecting your home from potential issues.

           Importance of Fascias and Soffits

           Structural Integrity:

Fascias and soffits play a crucial role in maintaining the structural integrity of your roofing system. By supporting the lower edge of the roof and preventing moisture from entering, they contribute to the overall stability and longevity of your roof.

           Aesthetic Appeal:

Beyond their functional aspects, fascias and soffits significantly impact the visual appeal of your home. Well-maintained, aesthetically pleasing fascias and soffits enhance the curb appeal and overall value of your property.

           Ventilation and Insulation:

Soffits, in particular, are essential for ensuring proper ventilation in the roof space. Adequate ventilation helps regulate temperature, prevent condensation, and protect against issues like mold and rot. This contributes to better insulation and energy efficiency.

will explore the top tips for effective roof maintenance to safeguard your investment and ensure a durable and reliable roofing system.

1.Regular Inspections: The Foundation of Maintenance

Roofs aren’t forever; you need to regularly inspect and maintain your roof.

           Scheduled Check-ups

Establish a routine for roof inspections, ideally twice a year—spring and fall are excellent times. Look for signs of damage, such as missing shingles, cracked tiles, or any visible wear and tear. Catching issues early can prevent them from escalating into more significant problems.

           Interior Examination

Don’t forget to inspect your attic or ceiling for signs of leaks, water stains, or mold. Interior examinations can reveal hidden issues that might not be immediately apparent from the exterior.

2.Clear Debris: A Clean Roof is a Healthy Roof

Debris tend to build up over time; and you need to make sure you get a professional to clean your roof for you. That’s where Feeney Roofing comes in!

           Gutter Maintenance

Regularly clean out your gutters and downspouts to prevent clogs. Clogged gutters can lead to water backup, causing damage to the roof and potentially leading to leaks.

           Tree Limb Trimming

Trim overhanging branches to prevent them from scraping against the roof during storms. This minimizes the risk of physical damage and prevents the buildup of debris.

Algae and moss can compromise your roof’s integrity over time. Clean your roof carefully, using recommended solutions, to remove these growths. Regular cleaning helps maintain the roof’s appearance and prevents damage.

While cleaning is essential, avoid using high-pressure washers, as they can damage roofing materials. Opt for gentle methods to preserve the integrity of shingles and tiles.

Quickly addressing any minor issues will save you from large repair bills.

           Timely Patching

           5.Weatherproofing: Preparing for the Elements

Neither sunshine nor rain is necessarily kind to your roof. That’s why you need to have Feeney Roofing weatherproof it.

           Reinforce Seals

Inspect and reinforce seals around vents, chimneys, and other roof penetrations. Proper sealing prevents water from seeping through vulnerable areas during heavy rain or snow.

           Check Flashing

Examine the flashing around your roof’s edges and features. Damaged or loose flashing can allow water to enter, causing leaks. Ensure that all flashing is secure and in good condition.

Conclusion: A Proactive Approach for a Lasting Roof

Asphalt Shingles: Asphalt shingles are primarily composed of petroleum-based materials, which raises environmental concerns. While some recycling options exist, a significant number of old shingles end up in landfills.

Asphalt Shingles: Asphalt shingles require regular maintenance, including periodic inspections, repairs, and replacements. Exposure to harsh weather conditions can cause shingles to deteriorate over time, necessitating ongoing attention and investment.

The decision between asphalt shingles and metal roofing ultimately depends on your budget, preferences, and long-term goals. If upfront cost is a significant factor and you plan to stay in your home for a limited time, asphalt shingles may be the pragmatic choice. However, for those seeking a roofing solution that combines longevity, durability, and energy efficiency, metal roofing offers an appealing option.

When it comes to the overall energy efficiency of a building, the role of insulation cannot be overstated. In particular, the insulation of a roofing system plays a crucial part in maintaining a comfortable indoor environment while reducing energy consumption. In this blog, Feeney Roofing will delve deep into the significance of roofing insulation and how it contributes to enhancing energy efficiency.

           Understanding Roofing Insulation

Roofing insulation refers to the material used to reduce heat transfer between the interior and exterior of a building through the roof. It acts as a barrier that helps keep the indoor space cooler during hot months and warmer during cold months. This is achieved by minimizing the movement of heat between the building and its surroundings.

           Benefits of Proper Roofing Insulation

           1. Reduced Energy Consumption

Effective roofing insulation can significantly lower the need for heating and cooling systems to work overtime. By preventing heat from escaping during winter and blocking excess heat from entering during summer, insulation reduces the strain on HVAC systems. This, in turn, leads to reduced energy consumption and lower utility bills.

           2. Enhanced Comfort

Insulation not only keeps energy costs in check but also creates a more comfortable indoor environment. With a well-insulated roof, the temperature inside remains relatively stable, avoiding extreme fluctuations. This makes the living or working space more pleasant for occupants.

           3. Environmental Impact

Lower energy consumption means a reduced carbon footprint. By utilizing less energy to maintain indoor temperatures, buildings with proper roofing insulation contribute to environmental conservation efforts. The decrease in greenhouse gas emissions helps mitigate the negative effects of climate change.

           Types of Roofing Insulation

Roofing insulation comes in various forms, each with its own set of characteristics. Here are a few common types:

           1. Blanket Insulation

This type of insulation consists of flexible rolls or batts that are placed between roof joists or beams. It is often used in attics and is effective in both new construction and retrofitting projects.

           2. Spray Foam Insulation

Spray foam insulation is a versatile option that can be applied as a liquid and then expands to fill the desired space. It provides an airtight seal, preventing air leakage and enhancing energy efficiency.

           3. Rigid Board Insulation

Rigid board insulation comes in the form of solid panels made from materials like polystyrene, polyisocyanurate, or polyurethane. It is commonly used in flat or low-slope roofs and offers excellent thermal resistance.

           Installation Considerations

Proper installation of roofing insulation is paramount to its effectiveness. Hiring a professional roofing contractor ensures that the insulation is placed correctly, without gaps or voids that could compromise its performance.

           Conclusion

The role of insulation in roofing goes beyond simply keeping a building warm in the winter and cool in the summer. It is a key player in improving energy efficiency, reducing utility bills, and enhancing the overall comfort of occupants. When investing in a roofing system, considering the insulation materials and their installation is a wise decision that pays off in the long run – both for your wallet and for the environment.

Green roofing, also known as living roofing, entails the complete coverage of a roof with vegetation. It involves the placement of grass and small plants, often native to the local area, on a layer of soil that sits atop a synthetic waterproof membrane.

While green roofing offers numerous benefits, it does require regular maintenance and can be costly to install. Additionally, the structural integrity of your home may need reinforcement to accommodate the weight of a green roof.

It’s worth noting that the waterproof membrane used in green roofing typically relies on petroleum-based materials, which are not sustainable resources. However, green roofing provides exceptional insulation, helps reduce the heat island effect, and mitigates runoff issues.

The aforementioned details provide a brief overview of some sustainable roofing options. If you need assistance in selecting the right choice, it’s advisable to consult with a local roofing expert. They can provide guidance on options that may require additional structural support and suggest materials that are locally or more responsibly sourced.

           Conclusion

Choosing an environmentally friendly roofing option is a significant step towards sustainable living. Whether you opt for metal roofing, solar roofing, recycled shingles, clay or concrete tiles, or even living roofs, each option brings its own set of benefits for the environment and your home. Consider your priorities, budget, and climate conditions when selecting the best roofing material for your needs. Remember, investing in an environmentally friendly roof not only helps reduce your environmental impact but also contributes to long-term energy efficiency and a greener future.

If you’re planning to install a new roof or replace an old one, you may have heard the term “drip edge” mentioned. A drip edge is an essential component of your roofing system that plays a crucial role in protecting your home from water damage. In this blog, Feeney Roofing will discuss what a drip edge is, how it works, and why it’s important for your roof.

           What is a Drip Edge?

A drip edge is a piece of metal flashing that is installed along the edges of your roof, where the shingles meet the fascia board. It is typically made of aluminum, galvanized steel, or copper, and is shaped like an L or T. The purpose of a drip edge is to direct water away from the roof and into the gutters, preventing it from seeping into your home’s structure.

When it rains, water runs down your roof and towards the edges. Without a drip edge, the water can seep underneath the shingles and cause damage to the roof deck, fascia board, and even the interior of your home. A drip edge prevents this by providing a barrier that directs the water away from the edge of the roof and into the gutters, where it can safely drain away from your home.

While not all building codes require a drip edge, it is generally considered a best practice to install one. A drip edge can help protect your home from water damage and pests, and it can also enhance the appearance of your roof. Additionally, many roofing manufacturers require the installation of a drip edge in order to honor their warranties.

Why is a Drip Edge Important?

Second, a drip edge can help prevent pests such as rodents and insects from entering your home through the gaps between the roof and the fascia board. Finally, a drip edge can enhance the appearance of your home by providing a finished look to your roofing system.

How is a Drip Edge Installed?

Installing a drip edge is typically done as part of a roofing installation or replacement project. It involves placing the drip edge along the edge of the roof, under the underlayment and over the fascia board. The drip edge is then fastened to the roof deck using roofing nails or screws, and the shingles are installed over the top of the drip edge.

Why is There Ponding Water on My Flat Roof?

Ponding is something that most people are unaware of since this does not occur on sloped roof systems. This occurs when water collects in puddles on the roof instead of draining off in a timely manner. Homeowners may believe that this water is harmless but as water continues to build, it can have a negative impact on the roof and your whole home.

When it comes to owning a flat roof, it is important to understand what ponding is and how to resolve the issues that may impact your home. Maintaining the roof is important which is why early prevention and professional help is recommended.

Ponding occurs when water gathers on the roof for an extended period of time. the

(NRCA) considers ponding as water that has gathered for longer than 24-48 hours. Some water can collect in dips or around drains which should be monitored to see how long it sits.

Flat roofs should never hold water for extended periods of time. Small amounts of water can even have serious impacts to your home. Many factors of water retention can cause many different issues that may lead to major damage. Weight, erosion, plant growth, and leaks can all be factors that may lead to major damage.

Even small amounts of water can be heavy which can cause major stress on the roof trusses or other parts of the building. The roof has a specific weight limit that can be exceeded from one large pond to many small ponds that have not been maintained.

Exposure to eater over long periods of time can increase the effects of environmental conditions that would damage your house. Water molecules can erode roofing materials and can increase damage from the sun. Winter can also cause ponds to freeze which produces ice that can damage your roof. Erosion due to ponds does occur and can cause your roof to fail.

Ponding typically allows for the growth of many plants, algae, mosses, and lichen which has many impacts to your roof. Vegetation does not only increase erosion, but it can stain and grow into your roof system. Vegetation and water can also increase animal inhabitancy which can cause major issues to your roof and inside your home. Insects can even be attracted to water and vegetation that can then cause infestations. Vegetation can be a huge issue for homeowners that may simply become a nuisance that impacts the quality of your home and your quality of life in it. Pooling water can even be a breading ground for many insects including mosquitos.

Ponding typically causes roof leaks in many ways. The weight of the water alone can split your roof and cause it to cave in. Water can also penetrate the structure slowly causing rotting before the issue has been found. This water can also freeze which can damage the roof or reduce the life expectancy.

Ponding can cause severe damage which is why understanding the issue is important and following the right steps to address it is important. Avoiding damage is the best way to save money and reduce unwanted stress.

           Why Does Ponding Happen?

There are many reasons why ponding can occur and why it continues to get worse. These include:

            Improper installation:

A flat roof isn’t perfectly flat, and it must be installed on a slight pitch to allow for positive drainage of the roof. The slope should gently guide water towards the drains and If it slopes away from the drains instead or has an inconsistent slope, you may get ponding at the lowest points on the roof.

            Compressed insulation:

Some flat roofs are not built for foot traffic or for the storage of heavy items. When these roofs are used for that purpose, the insulation can compress, and this compression can create a low spot which may naturally collect water. The weight of the water can continue to increase this problem over time. You should not store objects or place heavy decoration on your flat roof unless the roof is specifically designed and protected to accommodate these loads.

It is essential to get an experienced roofing professional to install these features and their flashing to prevent this problem.

            Structural issues:

Buildings settle over time, and sometimes this settling can create problems with the slope of the roof and cause ponding.

            HVAC leaks:

Sometimes HVAC equipment that is installed on the top of the roof causes ponding because it is too heavy and creates a dip in the roof. The ponding water may also be normal condensation or an abnormal leak from the air conditioner itself. The water may be slowly draining but resupplied by the machinery. In this case you will need an HVAC professional to fix the equipment’s leak or reroute the normal condensation.

Removing water from a flat roof is only a temporary fix which will not prevent any future issues from occurring. You will need a professional to help you fix ponding on your flat roof. There are several flat roof ponding solutions that your roofer may discuss with you. Which one is right for your roof will depend on what’s causing the ponding and the specifics of your

            Conduct the Roof Inspection:

When you call roofers about your flat roof’s ponding, the first thing they should do is

            inspect the roof

to discover what is causing the ponding. Your roofers may also need the help of an architect or structural engineer if there has been structural damage to the home. Your roofers should explain what the problem is and give you a quote before they begin work.

            Fix Structural Issues:

When ponding has caused structural damage to the building, that damage should be addressed first. Your roofers may need to work with structural engineers or architects to make a plan to address structural issues.

            Fix Slope Issues:

If your roofers found that your previous roofers installed the flat roof without the proper slope, they may need to replace the entire roof. Unfortunately, this is one of the more expensive and time-consuming solutions to ponding, but if the roof is improperly sloped, you may have no other choice to solve the ponding for the long-term.

            Fix Drainage Issues:

When the drains are the problem, your roofers have a wide variety of solutions available to them. It may be that you need to add in a new drain or change the drainage system so that it can accommodate more water. If the drain is frequently getting clogged, your roofers may recommend a better drain screen, or for you to get the roof cleaned more regularly. In cold climates, meltwater from snow may freeze in the drain. In this case, your roofers may recommend an electric cable to re-melt any ice in the drain or they may suggest a new schedule for snow removal that may reduce ice development.

Fix Low Points on the Roof:

If your roof has a correct slope overall but has developed low points from improper installation, misuse or damage, your roofers can correct those specific low spots on the roof. They may install a

Ponding can be extremely detrimental to your roof and if not properly addressed, can continue to get worse, cause roof leaks, early onset of roof decay and in turn, damage your entire home.

A professional roofer should be able to get to the root of your ponding problem, resolve it, and help you understand how you can avoid this problem in the future. At Feeney Roofing, there are experts that can share expertise and maintenance to help with every homeowners needs.

At Feeney Roofing we are always up to date and appreciate what WSIB does for our workers. Workplace insurance pays workers 85% of their take-home pay if they cannot work because of work-related injury or illness, up to a maximum insured wage of $90,300 in 2018. (Note: WSIB pays 90% of the worker’s take–home pay if the injury occurred in the period from April 1985 – December 1997.

As a result, you, as a homeowner, are protected against costly court settlements and receive support when you need it. This gives you peace of mind knowing you are working with the right people.

Feeney Roofing strives to provide excellent customer service with our experts that have years of experience. Covid-19 has made it extremely difficult for businesses to operate at their full capacity, but roofing remains essential during these unprecedented times. We are working at full capacity and are following all guidelines to provide services for our clients. We continue to wear masks during work and are continuing social distancing practices.

As we are moving to stage three we are still doing what the government requires for your safety and for our employees. Even though we are moving to stage three this does not mean we can move faster. The roofing industry is also having an issue getting materials for roofing jobs which affects timelines.

Flat and low slope roofing is a style of roofing that is used for many different building types from residential to commercial. Typically, in Ontario, flat and low slope roofs are less common as the precipitation is usually high. This means that finding the right expert for your flat roof with the proper experience can be difficult. Feeney Roofing can provide experts that have worked with flat and low sloped roofs for decades so that your building will stay leak–free and insulated for years to come. Many materials can be used for flat roofs ranging from asphalt to synthetic rubbers depending on the style and requirements of the building.

Many flat or sloped roofs in Ontario are used for living spaces to experience the outside in places where there isn’t much property. Roof living spaces require proper care for both an aesthetic appeal and safety for the people using them. Many commercial buildings in Ontario also use flat or low sloped roofs which our experts have decades of experience with replacing, repairing, and installing.

Our team works around the clock with commercial buildings to provide businesses the opportunity to work uninterrupted during business hours. Feeney Roofing has been doing Flat and Low slope roofs for decades and has a proven positive track record when it comes to quality, price, and timeline.

Step 1: Prioritize Safety First Before Cleaning Your Roof

Before you start cleaning your roof, make sure to prioritize safety first. Working on a roof can be dangerous, so it’s important to take precautions to prevent accidents. Wear appropriate footwear with good traction and use a sturdy ladder that is securely positioned. It’s also a good idea to use a safety harness or rope to prevent falls, and to avoid working on the roof alone.

Step 2: Clear Away Debris from Your Roof

The first step in cleaning your roof is to clear away any debris that has accumulated over the winter months. This includes leaves, branches, and other organic material that has collected on your roof. You can use a broom or a leaf blower to clear away the debris, being careful not to damage the roof in the process. Make sure to also clear away any debris from around the roof, as it can easily blow back onto the roof. While leaving debris is a no-brainer, make sure you also clear overhanging branches, vines, and plant growth on your roof!

Step 3: Inspect Your Roof for Any Signs of Damage

After you’ve cleared away debris from your roof, it’s important to inspect it for any signs of damage. Look for cracked or missing shingles, damaged flashing, or leaks. Check for signs of wear and tear, and pay special attention to areas where water may collect. If you notice any damage, it’s important to address it promptly to prevent further damage to your roof.

Step 4: Choose a Cleaning Method That Works for Your Roof

Once you’ve cleared away debris and inspected your roof for damage, it’s time to choose a cleaning method that works for your roof. There are several methods to choose from, including pressure washing, chemical cleaning, and manual cleaning. Each method has its pros and cons, so make sure to choose the one that’s best suited for your roof type and condition. Be sure to follow safety precautions and manufacturer’s instructions carefully.

Step 5: Don’t Forget to Clean Your Gutters and Downspouts

While you’re cleaning your roof, don’t forget to clean your gutters and downspouts as well. Clogged gutters and downspouts can cause water damage to your roof and the rest of your home. Use a gutter scoop or a pressure washer to clear away any debris. Make sure to also inspect your gutters and downspouts for damage and repair or replace as needed.

Step 6: Take Preventative Measures to Keep Your Roof

To prevent your roof from getting dirty again quickly, there are several preventative measures you can take. Trim back any overhanging branches that may drop leaves and debris on your roof. Install gutter guards to prevent debris from getting into your gutters. Finally, consider having your roof professionally cleaned every few years to keep it in top condition. By taking these steps, you can help ensure that your roof stays clean and well-maintained for years to come.

           Conclusion
